General information

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 1985 and is the only academic institution providing under-graduate education in the field of biomedical engineering in Greece. The first graduates graduated in 1990.

The field of studies of the Department is the theory and technological applications of biomedical technology. This concerns any technological applications in the health care area, from basic research in medicine and biology to the clinical practice. It comprises educational fields from engineering science, like mechanical and electrical engineering, electronics and computer science, as well as the physical sciences. The curriculum also includes subjects in medical sciences, management, and economics.

The duration of studies is eight (8) semesters. During the first seven (7) semesters the studies include theoretical teaching, laboratory exercises, construction of devices, seminars, visits to hospitals, and practicals, focusing on case studies and group exercises. The last (8th) semester includes professional training in the public or private sector. The students of the Department additionally have to complete a Degree Thesis on a biomedical engineering subject.

In the Department of Biomedical Engineering, during the winter semester of the academic year 2010-2011, 92 new students were registered. Today the Department has about 800 active students, 16 persons as permanent educational staff, 7 adjunct laboratory instructors, 2 specialized technicians and 2 secretaries.
