Structure of studies

The duration of studies is eight (8) semesters. During the first seven (7) semesters the studies include theoretical teaching, laboratory exercises, design and construction of devices, seminars, visits to hospitals and practicals. The last (8th) semester includes vocational training by selection in the public or private sector.

The studies in our Department have as purpose to teach the theoretical and applied technological principles of the following sectors in the field of Biomedical Technology:

  • The technological applications and the theoretical principles of the in vivo and in vitro diagnosis, including biosignal acquisition devices, medical imaging devices as well as analyzers.
  • Intensive care medicine and surgery technology, including devices for the support of vital functions.
  • Technological applications and theoretical principles of the operation of healing devices, including radiotherapy and electrotherapy devices.
  • Rehabilitation technology, i.e. the technological applications and theoretical principles of devices used for the rehabilitation of body functions. Among other topics it covers the use of technology for improving the quality of life of persons with special needs and also the implementation of artificial parts and organs.
  • Industrialization, which covers the theory of mechanical application to systems of the human body.
  • Clinical engineering, including the technology and the techniques of medical decision support and biomedical technology management.

The studies are structured so that the students also obtain knowledge in:

  • Administration as well as quality control and assurance in biomedical technology.
  • Research methodology, including the collection of information, its analysis and the composition of studies and complex exercises, as well as the implementation of small systems constructions.
  • Practicing the obtained knowledge in business positions.

The vocational training in the 8th semester takes place in private companies which produce or sell medical devices, in hospitals and other public or private sector enterprises or institutions, in order to consolidate the previous semesters' knowledge. The exercise also provides the possibility of taking initiative and of developing problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Finally the Degree Thesis provides the opportunity for the student to obtain the experience of studying a specific aspect of biomedical engineering in depth, focusing on developing the student's personal skills.
